Mission
The mission of Best Friends Animal Society is to bring about a time when there are No More Homeless Pets. We do this by helping end the killing in America's animal shelters through building community programs and partnerships all across the nation. We believe that by working together we can Save Them All.

The problem of homeless pets is not a national problem, though; it is actually thousands of local problems. In order to create lasting change to help these animals, every community in the country must plan and execute its own solution. Best Friends is a resource for those communities, providing indirect support with strategies, information, and resources, as well as direct lifesaving assistance.

Here in Salt Lake City, Best Friends operates a Lifesaving Center in the Sugarhouse neighborhood, where we provide this assistance to shelters across the northern part of Utah and other Mountain West states. We provide pet food assistance to community cat caregivers and low-income pet owners to keep these animals out of shelters. We pull cats and dogs from overcrowded shelters that can't care for them and either transport them to other parts of the country where more resources exist, or find them foster homes here in Salt Lake until the day they get adopted. We provide low cost spay and neuter services to shelters and rescue groups to curb the number of unwanted litters.

As a Best Friends volunteer, you can play a role in increasing the number of positive outcomes for shelter pets right here in Utah. Tasks as simple as helping to clean and sanitize animal holding areas helps increase the number of cats and dogs we can take in. You can volunteer to drive animals to the places they need to go, or help distribute food in our Pet Food Pantry. And perhaps most importantly, you can become a foster caregiver to give a cat or dog the compassionate care and attention they deserve as they wait to find their Forever Home.

We offer psychosocial support for kids being treated for cancer (& similar disorders) & their families. Our mission is to create an atmosphere that enhances self-esteem, fosters independence & friendships, & offers a sense of belonging. Participants have the freedom to "just be kids" (at any age!) for a time & stretch their limits physically, mentally, & socially. We offer in-person summer camps, including two 5-day overnight sessions, one for kids (ages 7-11) & one for teens (ages 12-19), and a 2-day program for ages 4-8. We also offer virtual camp for ages 6-19. In addition to camps, we provide 4 family activities each year to further serve these families.

We have volunteer opportunities in our Food Pantry, Thrift Store, and for special projects. Prior to volunteering, we require attendance at a 30 minute virtual volunteer orientation. If pre-filled volunteer orientation times do not work for your schedule, there is a section to fill in a suggested date/time and we will do our best to accommodate you.
