Meeting notes from 1/31/24 with Darren Burton

    Hi everyone!

Thanks for coming to the meeting and pitching ideas for both Engineering Week and the Student Symposium Concrete Bowling Ball design ideas! There was a lot covered and I tried my best to record everything we covered.

Engineering Week will take place February 20th – 24th, where we as a club will plan on hosting a couple of events from Noon to 1 PM in the SI building (East Entrance with the double doors in front of the STEM Center entrance). We were thinking:

    - Tuesday (Shake-Table) – A shake table that will hold magnetic structures and/or Legos to demonstrate seismic resilience in structures. We can allow students to build and test their designs on the platform. A Dole-Whip machine will be reserved from the Thayne center to also entice people to stop by.

Note: Maybe adjust the set screw on the rotating arm connected to the stepper motor to increase the “violence” of the shake table.

    - Wednesday (Paper-Bridge) – On Wednesday, we were planning on having a paper-bridge construction and test, where students can build paper bridges to withstand the weight of pennies. We can reserve a cotton candy machine for this day.

    - Thursday (Egg-Drop) – Finally, on Thursday, we were going to host an egg drop from the 3rd story balcony on the east side of the building. A popcorn machine will be reserved for this day, as my design (and many others) have used popcorn to cushion the egg as it fell. We were told we would receive some funding for this event, thanks to the help of Darren Burrton, our regional ASCE Governor.

    - Friday (ASCE Regional Meeting) – We will not be hosting anything at the college (unless anyone wants to host another civil engineering-inspired activity), instead, please come join us for the regional meeting! (More to come, will update on Campus Groups). I will probably not be able to attend, since I have to work that day.

We want to play a video from ASCE titled, “Dream Big”, which will play during the event, and are seeking permission to do so from the TVs in front of the STEM Center.

We are also hoping to gather more volunteers to help with the Lego State Tournament happening in Ogden at Weber State University. This will mainly be set up and break down from 8 AM to 4PM. The sign-up sheet can be found at this link: https://www.firstinspires.org/ways-to-help/volunteer/how-to-register?hsCtaTracking=4ed829f0-bfa9-4ba8-ad1a-7e3a471f7471%7C921f31dd-192e-466f-935c-1a284382f43b

And finally, our SLCC ASCE Club would like to compete in the Concrete Bowling Ball competition this year at Logan’s ASCE Student Symposium. The Bowling Ball building rules and specs can be found at: https://studentsymposium.asce.org/intermountain-southwest/wp-content/uploads/sites/15/2024/01/ISWS-2024-Concrete-Bowling-Rules.pdf

(sorry Korin and Jake, I pulled up the wrong symposium rules for the original designs). The design elements of the bowling ball. The design requirements include having no resins or epoxies, must be able to roll down the alley, being between 8 to 9.5 inches in diameter, and weighing less than 16 pounds. We need to create a mix table and send that to isws.usu.2024@gmail.com before March 23rd, 2024. All the details can be found in the link above. Korin mentioned getting mix and design inspiration or help from UVU.

The Student Symposium Registration head-count is required by Feb. 15th. The Symposium will run from April 11th-13th, Thursday through Saturday. Everyone interested in joining should let Korin (or any other club officer) know by our next meeting, on the 14th of February.

Thanks again for attending guys, there was a lot to cover, but it will be a great year for the club! Don't forget to invite your civil engineering classmates to join!
