An alternative break program typically sends teams of college students to different communities to engage in community service and experiential learning during their school breaks. Students perform short-term projects for community agencies and learn about a specified issue area for the whole break. Being completely immersed in diverse environments enables participants to experience, reflect, and understand social issues in a meaningful way. The intensity of the experience increases the likelihood that participants will transfer the lessons learned on-site back to their own communities even after the alternative break ends.

The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge program provides a free home away from home for cancer patients and their caregivers. More than just a roof over their heads, it’s a nurturing community that helps patients access the care they need. Each Hope Lodge community offers a supportive, homelike environment where guests can share a meal, join in the evening’s activities, or unwind in their own private room. Patients staying at a Hope Lodge must be in active cancer treatment and permanently reside more than 40 miles away from their cancer treatment center.

The mission of Best Friends Animal Society is to bring about a time when there are No More Homeless Pets. We do this by helping end the killing in America's animal shelters through building community programs and partnerships all across the nation. We believe that by working together we can Save Them All.

The problem of homeless pets is not a national problem, though; it is actually thousands of local problems. In order to create lasting change to help these animals, every community in the country must plan and execute its own solution. Best Friends is a resource for those communities, providing indirect support with strategies, information, and resources, as well as direct lifesaving assistance.

Here in Salt Lake City, Best Friends operates a Lifesaving Center in the Sugarhouse neighborhood, where we provide this assistance to shelters across the northern part of Utah and other Mountain West states. We provide pet food assistance to community cat caregivers and low-income pet owners to keep these animals out of shelters. We pull cats and dogs from overcrowded shelters that can't care for them and either transport them to other parts of the country where more resources exist, or find them foster homes here in Salt Lake until the day they get adopted. We provide low cost spay and neuter services to shelters and rescue groups to curb the number of unwanted litters.

As a Best Friends volunteer, you can play a role in increasing the number of positive outcomes for shelter pets right here in Utah. Tasks as simple as helping to clean and sanitize animal holding areas helps increase the number of cats and dogs we can take in. You can volunteer to drive animals to the places they need to go, or help distribute food in our Pet Food Pantry. And perhaps most importantly, you can become a foster caregiver to give a cat or dog the compassionate care and attention they deserve as they wait to find their Forever Home.

This club requires NO EXPERIENCE to join. everyone is an undergrad here and everyone is learning along the way with each other. This club is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to gain experience in working within a team setting on a large engineering project. This club is very open to working with college student's schedules, so if you don't have much time to work on the club don't worry, you can still join and stick around.

This Club also now has a dedicated class in the fall semester for working on the rover as well. The Class is ENGR 2900 and the name of the class is "Special Engineering Topics". This class will very likely be a very easy A grade and it will give you great hands-on experience with working on the rover. If you are interested, feel free to register for the class.

We offer psychosocial support for kids being treated for cancer (& similar disorders) & their families. Our mission is to create an atmosphere that enhances self-esteem, fosters independence & friendships, & offers a sense of belonging. Participants have the freedom to “just be kids” (at any age!) for a time & stretch their limits physically, mentally, & socially. We offer in-person summer camps, including two 5-day overnight sessions, one for kids (ages 7-11) & one for teens (ages 12-19), and a 2-day program for ages 4-7. We also offer virtual camp for ages 6-19. In addition to camps, we provide 2-4 family activities each year to further serve these families.

Thank you so much for your interest in learning more about Circles Salt Lake. Volunteers with Circles can play a few different roles. Each week, we provide dinner to our community of participants and volunteers. These dinners are donated by community groups, church groups, families, or individuals, and are a great way to participate in the Circles program. These can be one-time or ongoing opportunities for service.

We have four different Resource Teams that work to; create a sense of community at Circles, connect participants to services, recruit volunteers and participants, and make systemic changes to things that keep people in poverty. This is a monthly or weekly volunteer opportunity, depending on your availability.

Volunteers may also become Allies, or intentional friends, to a Circles family. Allies provide friendship and support to families in Circles, and commit to attending two weekly meeting per month for a minimum of 12 months.

We also have a vibrant and active Children's Program! We love to have volunteers work with the children who are able to make coming to Circles part of their routines, whether it is on a weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly basis. We currently have 35 children from the ages of 0-16 who come to Circles with their families every week. There are four age groups, and volunteers in each group play games with the children, provide them with homework help, teach short lessons, and serve as friends, mentors, and positive role models to the youngsters.

Friends for Sight volunteers assist with vision screenings at schools, preschools, businesses, and community events across the Wasatch Front. Most vision screenings are on weekday mornings, but there are occasional afternoon, evening, and weekend opportunities.
After being trained as a vision screener, volunteers will receive a link to our sign up page where they can sign up to help at screening opportunities that work for their schedule and location.

GiGi’s Playhouse was created to change the way the world views a Down syndrome diagnosis and send a global message of acceptance for all.

We understand that many families are first time parents and they need us. Many young parents do not expect, or know in advance of their child’s diagnosis, and they need renewed hope and genuine acceptance from day one.

At GiGi’s Playhouse families are never alone. From a prenatal diagnosis to career skills, we make a lifetime commitment to remain by their side. Families are empowered with all the tools their child needs to succeed!

Back in the summer of 2002, Nancy Gianni gave birth to her beautiful daughter, GiGi. She quickly realized that GiGi could do the very same things that her other children do! What began as a mother's vision to change perception, and maximize her daughter's successes, has evolved into a global movement of acceptance. Nancy needed to get GiGi, and her other children, ready for the world ahead – and get the world ready for GiGi!

The very first Playhouse was created to be an inspirational and dedicated place for families to celebrate their child and benefit from free, purposeful programs that unleash joy, confidence and continuous improvement. More than 48 Playhouses empower children and adults to achieve their “Best of All” and to pursue their dreams.

The main objective and purpose of the Pacific Unity Association (PUA) club is to address academic, cultural and social needs of Pacific Islanders attending Salt Lake Community College. PUA strives to perpetuate, strengthen and enhance cultural identity and heritage of Pacific Islanders through storytelling and sharing of experiences while implementing programs that inform, engage, and unite pacific islanders in their academic journey. SLCC PUA club focuses on three (3) core areas:

1. Advocacy
Advocate for the rights of Pacific Islanders and underrepresented, multicultural students and groups as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.

2. Collaboration:
In collaboration with Salt Lake Community College Student Association (SLCCSA), Clubs and Organizations, and the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA), PUA seeks to address cultural and/or social concerns of underrepresented Pacific Islanders and multicultural students and groups, as well as extend an invitation to those who want to learn more about the culture and get involved with PUA.

3. Graduation and Retention
We serve multicultural students by sharing our experiences and knowledge of educational resources as a way of informing them of opportunities contributing to their access and success.
